The “bug” or the “itch”
All of us in this little community have been bitten by the bug. Sometimes the compulsions are stronger than others. Some of you might be wondering what I’m referring to, but my guess is that most of you know EXACTLY what I am talking about.
Its the “want” to make your next acquisition. Even after getting a new firearm that you’ve had your eye on, in the throes of the “bug,” sometimes you can’t help but look onward to the next one before you’ve even had a chance to go through a shakedown session with gun you just bought.
I’ve been there – and whether its 3 days or 3 months later, we tend set our sights pretty intently. You’ll find yourself starting to research like a freshman in college trying to ace a semester end paper. You’ll watch YouTube videos and start talking to all your like-minded friends about it. It will dance around in your head while you’re at work, making you feel like a kid who cant wait to get home from school to lock yourself in your room to seek MORE. More pictures. More videos. Hell, you might even actually go home and read real words on a page (more likely webpage).
The Inevitable Dilemma
I seem to have run into a little dilemma within what we discussed above… There are multiple possibilities and choices.
I’ll reluctantly admit that there are several offerings in the Sig P320 lineup that I find really attractive & intriguing. For the record, I don’t have any range time behind them. I have held them in person. I’m very aware of the controversy surrounding the platform… Some say that they’re largely solid since they’re the SI gun for the Military, and how they passed the trials, etc. Then there is the glaring, “stick out like a sore thumb,” issue of reported random discharges and injuries not only from civilians, but from front line duty situations as well. Kind of hard to ignore that, but lets table it for a moment.
I think that the P320 Max is very appealing. I find myself drawn to it. The lines, the SRO-like Sig optic pre-mounted, no irons on it, great capacity, and what seems like a really smooth slide. I can’t ignore it… it just calls my name. I know its competition focused, but that doesn’t register on my “concern” meter.
The slightly more pragmatic version of me (think second devil on my shoulder) tries to steer me to the P320 DH3, designed by shooting legend Dan Horner. Similar lines that are really good looking, but with a slightly smaller grip, and no optic on board. Still competition focused, but do-able for other uses as well.
And finally, the P320 Spectre Comp – some cool features, and I’m not sure why its appealing. Maybe the gold accents. Perhaps the fact that it’s lightening cuts and comp seem to be functional in addition to looking cool. Or maybe it’s the name… Sig has clearly proven that they know how to market to suckers like me.
But when push comes to shove, can I really justify spending $1300-$1600 on a pistol that could randomly & inexplicably blow a hole in my peroneal artery? Even if it is a low odds occurrence? I wrestle with this, and I’m curious to know what people think.
Talk Some Sense Into Me
There is an even more realistic, smarter voice somewhere inside me that tells me to go in a wiser direction that is less risky, but equally as fun/practical.
This 4th devil on my shoulder wants me to just wait and get a Dan Wesson DWX. It combines the benefits of a DS 1911 (trigger, frame, weight) with the ergonomics and feel of a CZ Shadow series gun. What’s not to love? A bunch of YouTubers have blatantly put it out there that the DWX is one of the best shooting pistols they’ve had. Low recoil, great feel, solid fit & finish, with virtually flawless operation. The only hitch? $2,100 worth of hitch.
This leaves me searching for similar qualities at a better price point, so that I may continue to live in my house and still have use of our marital bed.
ENTER the Canik TTI Combat. Slightly different than the other options.. but many of the same features. Lightening cuts, comped, reportedly great trigger, great capacity, available with an SRO-like MeCanik ME03 already mounted, and for under $1,000.
While firearms equivalent of Augustus Gloop (look it up if you don’t get the simile) inside of me wants to sell my body to come up with the approximate $7,500 to have them ALL NOW is unable to be silenced, I will be forced to make a decision at some point.
What would you do? Show me your thought processes and help me take a walk through your minds. Help me Obi-Wan Kenobis – you’re my only hope 😊
